Technology-Free

I've always liked the part during airplane flights when the flight attendants say
to turn off everything with an "on/off switch."
I'm a technology addict [see: phone, cameras, cameras in phones, laptops, & everything within these products like the Internet, apps, so on and so forth] and the two or three or fifteen hours on a plane when I can shut myself out from all of that and just stare out the window at fluffy clouds, listen to some music, write and read magazines, and just get lost in my thoughts is time that I cherish.

Today, for a writing project, I turned off all technology for the whole day.
...
And it sucked.
I was so excited about getting to engage in real conversations and to sit in a sunny spot and journal. I was excited to take actual handwritten notes in class. I was ready to get up at the crack of dawn and go running without music or mile trackers, to have a meal without the distraction of constant buzzing, to read a book and rest my mind and all that.

It's not as great as it sounds.

I mean certainly, I enjoy time off from technology. I like going to a coffee shop and journaling and reading books and all that... but it's really different when you are actively restraining yourself from checking your e-mails. With the conscious knowledge that you can't do something... it's kind of awful. On an airplane, everyone has their electronics off. In everyday life, well, it's kind of just you because you had this bright idea to do so.

It's important to have quality "unplugged" time.
But not to the point of forcing yourself not to read blogs and watch a Youtube music video or click around Pinterest or having a hilarious emoticon conversation with a friend,
because sometimes those are the really good things in life too.

The Reveal: Tory Burch Calista

Drumroll, please!

Look who I found in the post office!

Thanks to La Mia Vita's Shopbop $100 giveaway,
Shopbop's fabulous Friends & Family 20% off sale,
and my sister's endless generosity...

These babies are mine.

The verdict: I ordered a Size 7 [I generally wear a 6.5 in flats and a 7 in boots is perfect with thick socks] in Sienna. The brown is redder than I expected, but I think I actually like it better that way. The leather is super soft and stiff as of right now. The only thing I would be careful about is that the foot size is perfect, especially with thick socks, but the calf part runs REALLY tight. As in, I think it's going to cut off circulation and I may have to amputate my legs kind of tight.

But it's okay.

[Actually, I've tried it on a few times and it gets a tiny bit looser each time, so I'll just pretend that eventually they'll fit perfectly without me having to run twenty miles a day.]

Currently...

Wearing this...

with leggings + boots.
(okay fine, not this exact sweater. but it's basically the same.)

Listening to...

the sound of rain.
(alright, that was last night. it's actually quite sunny outside right now. but it just sounds so much better than the coffee vending machine next to me in the psychology lounge...)

Thinking of...

food, because I skipped breakfast and am starving.

and...

Figuring out...

my life.
my major.

I'm meeting with the advisor I want this afternoon.
And then it's all about forms and clicking-on-buttons from there.
It's a big moment for me, y'all...
I've toyed with majoring in just about everything out there.
But I think I've finally figured it out!

sorry for the radio silence around here lately.
it's midterm season round these parts.
so, it's all libraries and textbooks for a bit!

If life was Facebook...
these are the moments I'd post a status about and then "like" it as well...
because I'm one of those people who would just high-five themselves :)

Sometimes, I get so caught up in trying to capture pictures
and details from a lot of the fun stuff that I do for the sake of blogging...
that I forget to just experience it.

So a goal of mine is definitely to take that easy,
to stop worrying about always having my camera on me...
I think I'll do these every Friday,
so that I can remember and relive all the great moments
that live so vibrantly in my mind
and not so much so on the camera screen!

these great note cards are from this generator.

Blown Away

Happy Wednesday!
I talked a little bit about what I did on Saturday this past weekend.
But now I want to tell you about Sunday.
Because holy moly, it was something.

Actually though, how California do these pictures look?
Meet my four best friends.
From left: Lauren, Kylie, Karen, and Cassandra.
It's about time you met them. I've mentioned them only ten million bajillion times.

So, here's how the story goes:
at the end of summer, we planned a best friend date to Carrie Underwood's Blown Away Tour.
Hunter Hayes was opening.
Carrie Underwood is just pure magic.
AND we could stop at In-N-Out.

Check.

It was such a beautiful night for a drive to San Jose.
The sky was breathtaking.
The music was eardrum-shatteringly loud.
Laughter filled the tiny car we squeezed into.

This isn't a cheesy Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie.
OK, maybe it is.

She got on this platform and got so close to us.
The five of us were waving frantically at her.

And she waved right back at us.

Also, I just really want that lantern/lights contraption for my dorm room.

Hi, Hunter!
Marry me?

Phenomenal.
So phenomenal.
Cassandra started crying during Temporary Home.
That's how phenomenal it was.

Really though... Carrie Underwood has such a powerful voice.
If you ever the chance - go see her.
She will... astonish you.
(And Hunter Hayes is just such a cutie pie.)

Have a great couple-of-days-before-the-weekend! You can do it!

Gorgeous Day in SF

Did I tell you that this is the first time in ten years that my sister and I have lived in the same city?
It's gosh darn fantastic.
I've seen her every week and it's so lovely to see her pretty face all the time now.

I went to see her in SF on Saturday.
Most gorgeous day ever.

See?
We strolled and chatted our way along Embarcadero...
and ended up...

Here.
This is Disneyland to me, people.
I have been waiting to visit the Ferry Market Building farmers' market since
I learned about food, SF, and happiness.

It was everything I imagined and more.
Bright, plump, juicy produce,
Lovely scents of food all around...
Heaven. Pure heaven.

Yes, that sounds good to me.
We went to Gott's for some lunch.

Just stare.
It's okay, go ahead... stare for a few minutes.
My cheeseburger was delicious and all, but...
Those sweet potato fries.
...

I can't speak.
Let's move on.
(They were really good. Really really good.)

Approval received.

Also, by some chance or funny coincidence or sisterly psychic cosmic connection,
we showed up wearing the same exact outfit (no planning at all),
Riding boots, white shirts, leggings, and navy blazers.
I was giddy with excitement,
but my sister practically ran the other way.
I think it's not as cool to match your little sister as it is to match your big sister?
Or something?

Here I am with my very first Blue Bottle coffee...
[New Orleans style ice coffee]
OK wait pause, let's talk about this.
I'm no coffee expert.
I love Starbucks.
But... Blue Bottle is on a level of its own.
Aromatic, pungent, whatever you want to call it...
It's insane.

After that goodness,
we walked to Union Square.
I have always been and am even more so
in love with San Francisco.
Where else can you find a Gangnam Style flash mob?

We shopped for the whole afternoon,
and I nearly missed my train...
the same train car which the new residents of my old dorm were in.
Blast into the past - very cool.

Before I leave you,
look at what I got...

Some goodies from Miette Patisserie,
another place on my must visit list.

Ahem.
Just look at the packaging.
I'm done.
It's over.

We got:
an assortment of macarons & a gingerbread cupcake
(which apparently is one of America's Top 10 Best Desserts).
To me, the cupcake connoisseur, it was a big moment.
Moist, subtle, with an amazing frosting... I definitely recommend.
Macarons are my new favorite sweet treats.
Loved the vanilla and pistachio!

Thanks for coming along with me on the ride.
I know it was a long one.
And thank you, sweet sister, for the most perfect day!

Life Lately

aka
Where Would I Be In Life Without Instagram?

very last cranberry limeade from Sonic for a very long time //
my news feed blew up when we had that amazing win against USC - forever Card! //
traveling essentials: Glamour, music, & cranapple juice //
In-N-Out with my dad - oh yes. //
the process of moving in ... I don't have enough clothes? //
a sweet message outside of our new dorm on move-in day! //
presents from my best friend's mom ... i honestly just can't even handle her. //
our best friends came to our suite to say hello for the first time! //
our reunion dinner: grilled cheese + tomato soup! //

late night Starbucks runs with the roomz //
out & about cheesin' //
a secret trip to Sprinkles with the top down & blasting music //
our freshman dorm roll out! it was an absolute blast... very bittersweet - when we all surged in the side door, screaming our dorm chant and being back in our old home with all of our Serra family... it was nothing short of amazing //
Kylie bought me Jamba Juice after she lost a bet - Pumpkin Smash is literally pumpkin pie in smoothie form - I highly recommend //
decked out in matching gear ... it was barely 60 degrees... problems. //
hot chai, tights, boots, & lots of work ... yep, it's fall again! //
getting up at 5:30am to roll out the freshmen for one of my organizations was definitely worth it because we were treated to three dozen Sprinkles cupcakes in the middle of the Quad! //
i came home to this after a very long day... isn't she amazing? //

roll out - a surprise attack basically on someone who has been accepted into an organization of some sort. most of the time, you do it in the morning and you holler and bang on their door and bring them somewhere fun. however, the special case is freshman dorm roll out where the previous year's residents all rush into the dorm and surprise everyone and see their old rooms and usually bring them out somewhere fun as well!

Things That Keep Me From Going Insane...

Last night, I left my last meeting at 12:34am.
The day before, I conducted six straight hours of interviews.
It's a bit of a problem when classes are my brain-rest time. Classes.
I start my first day of (real) work tomorrow (woohoo, I feel so grown up!).

Needless to say, I've been busy productive.
Oh and also... There's been a disastrous plague going around my suite & all of my friends.
It's beautiful.

Here's what's keeping me sane:

hello, pretty best friend! ...

& our Saturday best friend date nights to CoHo for salmon filet pasta, yum...

& baking brownies (from boxed mix, don't give me too much credit).
we added chocolate chips. & nutella. yes.

hello, half of Kylie's face :)

between the three of us & some other helpers...
we ate half the whole pan,
with lots and lots of milk.
and girl talk.

Kylie was also really smart and made ramen,
which I tried to steal,
& she was nice enough to pretend that she didn't notice.
(eventually, she took it away from me, but I guess there's got to be a limit somewhere...)

soy dirty chai heals disease.
that's all i'm saying.
bikes and i still don't get along very well,
but we're patching up our relationship.

we've been having such pretty, fall weather lately.
(by the way, God must love the Tarheels because he made the sky Tarheel blue :P)

leopard print + polka dots + fallen leaves.

morning walks to class.
(it's amazing that i didn't get run over in the process of snapping this picture.)

this is our new lovely fountain on campus,
can't wait to frolic.

green! pretty buildings! nice people!

keep on keepin' on, y'all!

:)
