Life Lately

+ hot chai and a birthday cake cake pop in the freezing mall.
+ iced chai on a hot, hot, blazing hot texas day. (somebody's a little obsessed.)

+ hotpot with our reunited family
+ bracelets from Thailand! from the lovely sister of course.

+ naptime & TV time. mellow, lazy, perfect.
+ Chinese checkers with my dad and sister (the champion is yours truly, of course).

+ shopping day, the best kind of day there is! (and more starbucks ... of course.)
+ homemade. noodles.

+ my sister flew over lovely Stanford. never knew I would miss this place so much.
+ best friend date - ice cream, sbux, shoe shopping, target runs.

Before you accuse me of having a slight MAJOR Starbucks addiction, trust me, I know. I'm trying to fix this, but I'm too far gone. I've been trying to forget about my beloved coffee by setting up camp on the sofa and watching the Olympics while stuffing my face with mochi being inspired by the athleticism and muscles and pretty faces (seriously, why are these people such champs at sports and absolutely gorgeous? not fair... leave something for the commoners, people!) of Team USA. (And other teams too, I guess... But mostly Team USA!)

Oh, Hello...

Oh, hello... getting woken up at 7:30am by your big sister shouting "you're my favorite person in the whole wide world!" and having her attack your face with a stuffed kitten. I'm going to miss her.

Oh, hello... intentionally opposite-matching the aforementioned sister and unintentionally semi-matching with the madre. Black and white and grey for the winnnn.

Oh, hello... shopping trip with the sister.

Oh, hello... dirty chai from Starbucks, I'm still obsessed with you.

Oh, hello... new shirts. I love you, you black and white H&M top with zebras on zebras on zebras. I like you a lot, simple black peplum shirt from F21, but I don't know what to match you with!

Oh, hello... handmade (okay fine, Kitchen Aid-made) noodles for lunch.

Oh, hello... long needed trimming of the bangs by my favorite hairstylist (hint: big sister).

Oh, hello... going to work for four long hours. But getting to hang out with cutie patootie kids is also a delight - especially when they compliment your favorite $6 wedges from Target.

Oh, hello... receiving a text from the sister - "Are you home yet??" and then walking through the door a second later screaming "YES! HI!"

Oh, hello... watching the Olympics Opening Ceremony. Loved all of the shots of London, JK Rowling reading Peter Pan, the 007 + Queen of England skit short movie thing, the Rowan Atkinson parts, the British accents, and all the times that the camera zoomed in on Kate Middleton! Oh, and the final torch run thing by the non-famous youngster athletes. (By the way, I am completely upset with the fact that the only Harry Potter reference was the creepy blow-up Voldemort balloon/parachute/car dealership bubble thing... Why, why, why...)

Oh, hello... watching the ceremony while eating dumplings around the kitchen island with my fun fun fun fambam.

Oh, hello... seeing my favorite diver friend's face for all of two seconds during Sir Paul McCartney's rousing rendition of Hey Jude! Priceless, priceless!

Oh, hello... the most perfect Friday of all Fridays!

Currently Craving...

1. Sprinkles ice cream - anyone who knows me also knows my undying affection for all things sweet and icy and creamily heartbreaking (i.e. ice cream, froyo, milkshakes and smoothies, frozen custard, everything). When the news that Sprinkles, one of my favorite cupcake places in the history of ever is coming out with its own ice cream... I just about fell flat on my face for twenty minutes, paralyzed at the thought of such goodness.

2. White laquer tray from West Elm - last year, bowled over by the messiness of my dorm room, I went on a sudden online-shopping spree, trying to find the perfect simple white laquer tray so as to sort out my jewelry or bottles and bottles of perfume/moisturizer/vanity ish or cups and glasses or just life itself. But I couldn't find a single one. I just wanted something plain. Shiny. Minimalistic so as to not make my room seem any more cluttered. Lo and behold, I saw this magical piece on Cupcakes and Cashmere this morning (perfect DIY project!) and will definitely purchase for next year. Because it's like fairy dust and will make my room the cleanest ever.

3. Vintage Olympics collection at Gap - T-1 day until the official start of the Olympics! Out of my mind excited! This year, one of my very good friends (who simultaneously lived down the hall from me and is one of the most endearingly hysterical, adorable, hilarious, genuinely kind boys I have ever met) Kristian Ipsen will be reppin' Team USA on the Men's Diving team (for 3m synchro). I am beyond excited to watch him on TV and want to be wearing this ultra soft, collectible-worthy shirt while I'm at it!

4. Cutesy fedora - because I had the sudden epiphany that a hat is the easiest accessorizing trick in the book. And also because I have suddenly developed an unhealthy fear of the sun and would rather keep a safe distance from it if possible.

5. Dirty (soy iced) chai from Starbucks - new favorite drink! The perfect mix of a kick-tastic, creamy chai and a jolt of espresso. I also want to try every single drink from the secret menu and rack up gold card points so I can be S-Bux VIP.

6. Pretty peplum from H&M - soft. Pretty. Pink. Flouncy. Lovely. 15 buckaroos. Yes.

What I Wore...

I promise the next post will have nothing to do with me taking a picture of myself in the mirror with an iPhone, grinning like Mrs. Cheeseball and pretending like I know what I'm doing.

It'll be something more like real life: my bed and some cookies and a movie. Or something.

left: TO WORK :: top - Gap :: jeans - Uniqlo :: necklace - C.Wonder
right: TO WORK STILL (because I have no life) :: top - Old Navy :: shorts - Gap :: belt - C. Wonder :: bracelets - present from sister's Australia trip

right: TO WORK & ERRANDS :: top - Urban Outfitters :: tank top - Aeropostale :: shorts - American Eagle :: purse - Coach :: earrings (not that you can see them, but they're really pretty, I promise) - from the sister from New York

left: TO CHINATOWN & GROCERY SHOPPING :: shirt - American Eagle :: tank top - Aeropostale :: shorts - Abercrombie :: necklace - from the sister's Australian adventure (this outfit is the epitome of teen-bopper, woohoo)

right: TO GO SHOPPING :: shirt - J. Crew :: belt - Gap :: skirt - PINK by Victoria's Secret

...And that's all folks. I'm liking these posts because they hold me accountable to actually putting on real-people clothes before stepping out of the door, not that I do that very often because there is currently a mosquito apocalypse plus humidity and heat overdrive going on down here. I think soon I'll try pulling out the DSLR and tripod for these pictures, but lordy, iPhone snaps are just so darn easy. Curse Apple and their genius products!

Hope everybody had a fun weekend! Mine included welcoming the sister home from her superlong Southeastern Asia travels, lots of fambam time, and... Starbucks. As per usual.

Shop With Me: H&M

A new H&M opened up at my local mall a couple of months ago and it has been the subject of massive frenzy hereabouts - especially with all of the huge sales it's been serving up lately. I'm not too familiar with H&M and both times I've set foot in there, I haven't seen anything that I coveted. But like I said, it was having a great sale this weekend, so I popped in and tried on a few things!

I have been looking for a quality chambray shirt forever but the perfect one has never come along - too dark, too light, too thin, too many weird appliques, so on and so forth. I really, really loved this one - it fit perfectly and was just so comfy and lovely. I felt like we were long lost friends! This was $25 - a bit pricey for my standards, especially because I can't wear it in the heat.

The blue Missoni-pattern-wannabe top was so pretty! I think one of my friends might have it and it is such a fun, classy party top! I didn't like the fabric very much though... it's scratchy and thin. I also thought the shape was too boxy for my figure, but at $5 - you can't go wrong!

I thought that the dress on the left (the belt is mine) was very lovely! The pattern is so quirky and fun - who would say no to hot pink zebras? - and it's a very appropriate length (there's a very subtle hi-low skirt going on too and a gold zipper at the back). Super cute for $18, but I didn't like how the front arm area fit. It just looked a bit awkward. But HOT PINK ZEBRAS.

Finally, this pink top was very much like the blue one up top. Same material, so I didn't love it, although it's just begging to be taken out on the town for some kicks and giggles. Somebody grant its wish! (Just $7... it's practically stealing.)

I only walked away with one of the things above, because I am saving up my pretty pennies for a new camera lens... Can anyone guess?

Have a great weekend, lovelies!

To Colorado, With Love

I was going to do a Fitting Room or What I Wore... post today, but in light of the recent tragedy, I did not want to talk about such fickle and superficial things out of respect.

So instead...

Please keep Colorado in your thoughts and prayers - the past month or so has been outrageously tragic and heartbreaking for this beautiful state. Send love and positive thoughts to Aurora, the victims and their families, and all those affected by this tragedy

Please always remember to never take life for granted - it is a cruel, cruel thing for so many lives to have been taken and for so many to have lost loved ones because they were going to see a movie. Going to see a movie. It is the most basic of human leisure activity - friends and family joyfully going to see a movie. Anything can happen at anytime. Life is precious.

Please tell your loved ones "I love you" and hug them a little tighter. Love with all of your soul!

Screens, Screens, Screens, Screens, Screens

(Chanted like the song Shots.)

I realized something.

I am addicted to screens. In the morning, I wake up and check Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook on my phone. Then I reach for my computer. Blogsurf all of my daily reads. I go eat, sometimes snapping a picture with my phone so I can hipster-gram it later. I come upstairs. Pinterest, Gmail, some more Facebook. Find more blogs to read. I go work out. Spotify on the laptop and NTC on my iPhone. Then, I go read a little. Kindle. Or I write. Macbook. For an afternoon reprieve, I go take some pictures. And then I notice - my camera is technically a screen too! Text people. Skype/Oovoo. More Facebook. Facetime. Then at night - Pretty Little Liars marathon on the TV or some Chinese soap operas on the laptop (okay I know I won't stop talking about these... But these shows change my life. Literally. I wrote my college admissions essay on one). Bedtime ritual: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, stories on the 'net.

This can't be good news.

 { early morning BBJX episode in bed ... I like Asian period dramas, don't hate! }

{ afternoon workout session with my good old trainer NTC and some jumpin' pumpin' tunes }

{ late night writing session with a bowl of banana sorbet with juicy peaches ... hey, it's inspiration! }

Please tell me I'm not alone in this? Maybe I just need to leave and go into the wild with a tent and some canned goods and nothing else and see if that will cure me?

We Walked In The Pouring Rain And All I Got Was A Java Chiller

Remember that Pinterest date I was supposed to have with my best friend? Yeah, about that... It completely happened if you consider a Pinterest date to be snacking on Vietnamese goodies while I spent two hours explaining my Chinese TV drama to her. They get really deep and complex, I promise!

While we didn't actually get our arts and crafts on, we did postpone that for a further date and decided to walk to Starbucks/Walgreens instead (no-car problems!). Halfway there, it started pouring and we had to walk the rest of the way in the rain and ended up soaking wet. It was definitely an adventure to laugh about looking back!

Walgreens parking lot

We did manage to reach our destination and were greeted with this sight! With every rain comes a bow :)

Observe the ratty hair, dripping wet clothes, and the "camera bag" I was trying to guard with my life.

On our way back (this time we waited for a clear sky before setting off...), I grabbed a Java Chiller from Sonic to make up for my bravery and resourcefulness when it comes to nature and we walked to the park, swinging and talking about life, death, and everything in between.

Such moments are priceless.

Did you have a good weekend?

Weekend Inspiration

I have a Pinterest DIY date with my best friend tomorrow and perhaps an itch to hit the stores and spend money that will very likely get scratched. Am also currently trying to convince some nice people to let me bake cookies with them so that I can feast myself to happiness!

Here are some pretty pictures to inspire you this weekend! They are all on my Pinterest and are via various sources that I have lost along the way, so if a picture belongs to you - feel free to let me know and I will credit you.

What are your plans this weekend?

Style: Bottoms Up!

When I am let loose in stores, I usually start reaching for the colorful tops and easy dresses, maybe another cardigan (or four), or even the shiny jewelry calling my name so sweetly. I tend to ignore the bottoms. Sorry, pants. Sorry, shorts. Sorry, skirts. It's just that the bottom half of outfits seem so much more like staples. I buy one thing in that category and it can last me through hundreds of outfits and lots of years! You know... Until they can't.

I've noticed the error in my ways and have been trying to zoom in on fun trousers and frilly skirts for me to go all grabby-grab-grab. Here are some favorites:

Is your heart racing with desire or what? The best part is I can see all of these pieces being extremely versatile. Both of the shorts and the skirt can be dressed up or down, and both pairs of jeans can go with a huge variety of tops and stylings. Can't you imagine an Equipment-like blouse with all of these? Or a chambray top tucked into the yellow skirt? Mixing prints with those tribal-print shorts? Parisian-chic with the black jeggings and a striped top. Color-blocking with the coral jeans. A preppy blazer with the lace scalloped shorts (by the way, I am still completely obsessed with scalloped edges. So fun.)? The answer is yes. Yes, you can. Snatch these up while you can, ladies!

1. Forever21 :: similar looks here, here, and here
2. J Brand :: similar looks here, here, and here
3. Urban Outfitters :: similar looks here, here, and here
4. Gap :: similar looks here, here, and here
5. Asos :: similar looks here, here, and here

Also, as I was scrolling through various websites looking for different options, I found these shorts and died a little bit inside. It has summer written all over it! Please, can I have?

What about you guys? What do you buy clothes-wise the most often? What does your closet need right now?

Life Lately

Reality of my life right now: lots of sleep-in time, going to work with the kiddies a couple of times a week to make some bank, lots and lots of blog-reading, a couple of Chinese soap operas (they are addicting, give me a break), a workout or two, some de-cluttering, and friend time!

A few snapshots that liven up the boring reality:

{ tickling the ivory for the first time in a very, very long time. }

{ homemade dumplings that my mom and dad made. yes, i am spoiled. }

{ a breathtaking shot of the sky on a balmy summer night. }

{ talking and chilling for hours with my beautiful friend Juliana and her significant other Trenton }

{ refreshing sno-cones - first of the summer for me! the lime green one is mine, a pina colada-like concoction. perfection. }

{ a pseudo-double date w/ Brina, Trent, and Juliana - thanks for being my "other half," Brina, you're the best best friend ever }

{ en route to Cheddar's with Juliana and Brina ... my Shepard's Pie was a tad too salty, but a still good treat! roundtable story time is the loveliest. }

{ babysitting duties. she survived the feeding! victory! }

{ Brina and I babysat for our former math teacher ... the darlingest kids ever. Such sweethearts! }

{ a Panera Bread and Pinkberry excursion with my middle school friends Brina, Valerie, and Maddie; such great conversations and they came with the realization that we are no longer the dorky, naive girls we used to be! also, it's kind of silly to review Panera Bread, but I want to rave about their Turkey Bacon Bravo... please try this sandwich if you go, its slightly sweet crunchy goodness is ridiculously amazing! }

xoxo, Caroline

What I Wore...

Outfit posts are no strangers to the blog world, and I thank the bright stars above for that! I could spend days upon days scrolling through various blogs and being inspired. With that said, I think I want to start posting a slightly different kind of outfit post. Here's why...

Disclaimer 1. I'm no fashionista. I'm in college and on summer break. I'm taking advantage of the one time in life where I can wear sweats everywhere and people won't judge me. Kind of.

Disclaimer 2. Once again, I'm in college and on a teensy weensy budget, which means I don't get to go shopping very often at all (I go once in a blue moon... the sad things in life... first world problems). So I can't really offer readers very creative outfits based on what's actually being sold in stores right now.

SO. Because I am a genius (ha, not really), I have a solution! I am going to take pictures of the outfits that I do actually wear in my everyday life, but I want to be able to analyze them to see how I can improve. I will use these pictures to see how I can clean out my closet, which items should be on my shopping list, and basically a ton of other baby steps that can launch me into non-sweats world!

{ from left: top nicked from my friend Lauren; white top by Target, belt by F21, skirt nicked from my friend Kylie; striped tank by PINK Victoria's Secret, white shorts by Ruehl, belt by F21, cardigan by American Eagle via Marshall's }

Notes: I work at a Kumon center twice a week, so I attend to a lot of parents and kids of all ages. Therefore, I have to dress somewhat conservatively, although nothing too restricting is required!

{ from left: blue top by F21, belt by F21, skirt by H&M, purse by Coach; red blouse by Hollister, belt by H&M, shorts by Gap, purse by Longchamp; green top by Hollister, shorts by Gap, belt by H&M }

Thoughts: I love belts. I have a lot of them too, so I should vary the ones that I use instead of sticking to the same two featured in these. I prefer slightly high-waisted shorts, so should stay on the lookout for those. And I should also keep an eye out for more variation in tops- I realize that I prefer looser, unique tops, so I should start buying quality ones over piles and piles of cheap F21 t-shirts. Last thing: ACCESSORIZE, GIRLFRIEND. Don't be too lazy to look in the jewelry drawers!

Any thoughts on this feature/my un-fashionista outfits? Tips, comments, suggestions? All welcome!

College: Surprising Essentials

Hi all! I hope that everybody had a wonderful and safe Fourth of July!

Going into college, I was excited but completely clueless. Imagine Bambi with his too-long and unsturdy legs, slipping and sliding every which way. That's me. Packing-wise and dorm decor-wise, I've definitely learned many a lesson: don't buy those square corkboard bulletin things. They don't stick and fall off like crazy. Chairs, ottomans, and full laundry baskets can all act as viable stepstools. Don't bring four huge suitcases full of clothes. You won't get to 86% of it. So on and so forth.

But through these nine months, I've learned. And next year, the contents of the suitcases I bring to school will be very different. Listed below are some of the things that I found essential this year, and surprisingly so! They are all items I never expected to need, but turned out to be absolutely necessary.

1. Lululemon Wunder Under Crop: I know, I know, so many people are completely over Lululemon. It's trendy and expensive, I get it. But hear me out! I am so pleased with all of my Lululemon products, but especially these Wunder Under crops. I wear them to yoga classes and to the gym, but I also wear them as thicker leggings, so useful in the chilly Palo Alto weather. It has been the smartest clothing investment I've ever made! At school, I literally wear these four or five times a week and they are still holding up wonderfully.

2. Vera Bradley Zip ID Case: I bought this as a little going-away gift for myself because I adore Vera Bradley patterns, but it has turned out to be the number one thing I cannot part with at school. I use it as a wallet and an ID holder. I put my school ID in the clear pocket, which is so useful because we have to swipe/scan it to do anything. I also put cash and cards in the main pocket so that I always have money on me to treat myself to coffee or a breakfast on the run! I have my room key, PO Box key, and bike key on the keychain. In other words, I have absolutely everything that I need on it at school. (Mine is in the Happy Snails pattern, but there are tons of cute options!)

3. Bed Tray: So, I didn't actually have this at school, but I've been using my sister's tray at home and it is so incredibly versatile, I am definitely bringing it back with me. Think about it: a dorm room is tiny and there are only so many spaces to utilize, one being your bed. This bed tray comes in handy when you want to eat in bed or just study - it keeps your laptop from getting too hot. Or even if you're lounging on a comfy chair or couch, this fits over your legs perfectly as a work/eating space. The one that is pictured is from IKEA and only for 8 bucks! It's practically stealing!

4. Plastic storage units: Once again, a dorm room is tiny, so you need as much storage space as possible. Plastic storage containers are so great for this purpose! The ones that are pictured are on sale at The Container Store for $8 - $23 each depending on the size (is anyone else obsessed with The Container Store like me?) and look amazing because they are color-coded. However, a variety in plastic containers is necessary - I had lots of smaller plastic trays and baskets for desk supplies, nail polish, accessories, etc. and bigger drawers for clothes. Handy, handy!

5. Clorox wipes: At $3.64, this is the cheapest, but one of the most necessary items for a college dorm! A dorm room gets gross. Dirty food gets on tables, the refrigerator stinks up, things get a little messy and dirty. Just wipe up the surface with some Clorox and you're good as new! Definitely a must-buy.

6. Memory foam mattress topper + jersey sheets: I was in love with my bed. All of those rumors about college dorm beds being absolute pooey, begone! Mine was heavenly because of these two items - a soft and cushy foam mattress topper in which I could sink into and jersey sheets - the softest, most cuddly things ever! I swear by them. I don't want silk sheets or 908504098234 thread count ones. I just want jersey sheets!

And one bonus product: Mr. Clean Magic Eraser: Just trust me on this one. The permanent hair dye we got on the bathroom's paper towel dispenser. The hot pink color stains we got on the wall. Jelly color stains we had on the light fixtures/ceiling. Old tape marks. Anything. Everything. The Magic Eraser gets rid of it all. It's a miracle product.

Anybody else have recommendations for dorm rooms/small places/college?
