Magic Mike, Milkshakes, & A Monsoon

Today, it rained. It rained a lot.

Try as I might, I couldn't capture the exact essence of this rainy day. There is something gothic and Wuthering Heights-esque about these images that I took from my bedroom window. But in fact, the rain was calming... Soothing. I'm not one to stand around and enjoy thunderstorms. Don't get me wrong - I love the sound of the rain, the smell, the naptimes that accompany such a time, the rainboots and umbrellas galore... But I'm terrified of lightening and generally just don't wish for thunderstorms to happen.

But after a school year sprinkled with weeks full of drizzling and no actual storm, I've come to appreciate an actual thunderstorm. And today, while lightening was striking and thunder was rumbling, I just laid down in my fuzzy purple chair and watched. And listened. And appreciated.

...Until we had to drive through this practical monsoon, that is. For thirty-five minutes. In order to get to the cheap movie theater. Where we watched this...

Magic Mike! And yes, thank you very much, we did indeed drive that far to get to a sketchy movie theater that sells matinee tickets for three bucks. Frugal, frugal.

Verdict on the movie? If you're looking for a movie that's just plain fun and has a world of good-looking actors as some quality (95% nekkid) eye candy, then you will absolutely love this movie. We laughed so gosh darn much during this film, it was hilarious. But if you're looking for a deep and meaningful, thought-provoking experience, then just save your three (or probably more) dollas. Oh, and DON'T bring your kids! I thought that this would be a given, but the people who were sitting next to us brought a baby and a four-year-old. The four-year-old was screaming "NO! I don't want to see this!" the entire time. Just don't force that upon your kids because they will surely grow up damaged.

After the movie, the rain had already stopped, so we decided to go for some icy treats -

Milkshakes (Oreo for me) from Jack in the Box! Thick and creamy and frothy sips of deliciousness! We (Sarah, Nicole, and I) also engaged in funny conversations while sitting there in JitB, reflecting back on our middle school and high school moments and planning for adventures that lay ahead for us. It's always special when I get to hang out with these two gaw-jus ladies because they are the friends that I have had the longest (in Texas, at least) who I'm still friends with. Seven years and counting! :)

This has been quite the lengthy post, but thanks for reading!

A Few Random Thoughts

+ I'm going to have brunch with my best friend Sarah tomorrow and then we are going to go see Magic Mike! Don't be surprised if I get sent to the hospital for having heart murmurs or something of that nature. (Not that I know what heart murmurs really are, but I feel like they are a definite possibility where Channing Tatum and Matt Bomer and crew are involved.)

+ I've been imagining life next year a lot lately, even though I know it's horrible to do anything but live in the present really. But I am so friggin' excited. Living a mere two-zone Caltrain distance away from my sister and being able to traverse to the city on random weekends (Ferry Building farmer's market! Mission Street burritos! Shopping on Union! What fun!), living with such a fun group in a suite and being so close to some other friends. Lunch and coffee dates with our friends who live further away. Actually going to the library to study (now that I've found some perfect spots in there...), so on and so forth. I'm so jittery with anticipation!

+ Did anyone watch the NBA draft last night? I watched for about an hour or so and am so pleased with how our UNC Tarheels players did! Tyler Zeller went to the Dallas Mavericks (conveniently located in my state, whoop!), Kendall Marshall was drafted to the Phoenix Suns, John Henson to the Milwaukee Bucks, and the one I'm most psyched about... Harrison Barnes to the Golden State Warriors! I guess I'll be going to GS Warriors games a lot next year! Snaps all around.

+ We had a legitimate thunderstorm down here for a few minutes today. I haven't experienced one in so long and it felt so lovely, even though I am terrified of lightening. Hoping that Colorado gets some rain and stat!

+ Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. Sad face. End of story.

Have a great weekend, everybody!

Healthy Eats: Banana Sorbet

Happy Wednesday!

It's weird to think that I've only been home for two weeks. I mean, I feel like I have been out of school for two months (or more)! The point that I'm trying to make, though, is that during my time at home I've also adopted a new project. My health and fitness.

At school, I have gotten used to eating whatever the dining hall serves - which often means resorting to a diet peppered with pasta and cheese. And soda. Lots and lots of soda. I also got a bit lazy toward the end of the year and stopped going to the gym in favor of spending time watching Chinese soap operas and basking in my last few weeks of freshman year. Therefore, I've decided to get fit again! This time, it won't just be about the exercise (which currently is in the form of running [on a treadmill... I can't handle the heat outside], Nike Training Club, the 30-Day Shred, and some yoga videos), but also about the food.

Recently, I have been eating primarily fruits and vegetables, which has been a very nice and cleansing change from what I usually eat. But with 100+ degree heat and a natural sweet tooth, I need an icy treat once in awhile!

That's where this phenomenon comes in. Banana sorbet (it's better known as banana soft-serve in the online food community, but I felt that the consistency was a lot more like sorbet than soft-serve).

It's literally the easiest thing in the world and completely delicious as well. Just grab a couple of ripe bananas, chop them up into 1 inch pieces, throw them in a big Ziploc bag and freeze them for a few hours. Then, you can either toss them into the food processor and make your life a lot easier, or just mash them by hand for ten minutes as an alternative arm workout (just kidding... but seriously, go for the food processor). Then, you can either eat it right then or if you're like me, place it back in the freezer for a couple more hours.

Once it's ready, just top it off with whatever you like - I went for raspberries this time which was so smart. Also recommended would be any other berry or fruit, or whipped cream, or even a dollop of peanut butter! Go nuts! Healthy and easy and delicious is a winner in my book :)

Yesterday According To Instagram

Just a few little tidbits from my day yesterday :: ps. did you know it was half-Christmas? I didn't until we watched the Half-Xmas episode of Workaholics - funny stuff!

raspberry, strawberry, and banana fruit salad + yogurt for breakfast
trying on some new brights: try this and this
blueberries and plain yogurt for a snack (obsession much?)
trying some banh mi at the Vietnamese bestie's place
a late night jaunt to La Brisa :: we were the last ones there and got locked in
shared some Tex-Mex with Brina :: nothing more perfect at 10 PM
going through the Micky D's drive-thru
my favorite Mocha Frappe from McDonald's during the Golden Hour!
some chill time at a friend's house :: saying goodbye to Will C. as he leaves for his mission soon

as we were driving around town aimlessly last night, our stomachs hurting from laughing so darn hard over nothing and anything, I felt so very thankful for the friends that I have. It was one of those perfect summer moments that made the 100+ degree, muggy, humid weather at night so much more forgivable...

The Stages of Room 217

Warning: super long post ahead that was written mostly for myself to remember my freshman dorm room!

Room 217 was my first home away from home, and it was a fantastic one at that. It gave me a lifetime's worth of memories full of tears, (a lot of) laughter, and even vomit. It has also gone through its fair share of various stages and I wanted to share with you the journey that this little box of a paradise went through with my lovely roommate and me.

Would you just look at the trippy windows/desks? The room went bonkers after our departure!
Stage #1: Ironically, this picture was taken the day after both of us left, so it should technically be the last stage. However, after a late-night conversation with Cassandra, I instead want to think of the empty room as the first stage and the fully-made home we left behind as the last stage. I personally have never even seen my room completely empty because Cassandra already had half of her stuff in it when I first showed up and she still had half of her stuff in it when I left. It's weird that it was taken after our stories in there unfolded because it doesn't look like we've lived there at all. But anyways, this was Stage #1. Then...

Stage #2: Mostly decorated, cleanest it's ever been. These pictures really amuse me because: 1) everything is just too... organized and set-up. Everything has its own place. Those bulletin cork board things are still up. Cassandra has her side and I have mine. Our stuff is on our own sides. That dynamic completely changed. We stopped having sides, stopped having proper places for things. 2) We actually used the things provided for us. See: recycling bin, desks, so on and so forth. This was the awkward stage, the I-have-my-own-"place" phase. Funny.

Stage #3: the massive decorating phase. Around Halloween/Christmas/Valentine's Day/a little bit of Easter, we went through this major obsession with decorating the room. Except... We might've overdone it. Just a little bit. This successfully turned our room into one big clusterbeep. We wrapped the door with wrapping paper, put up lots of twinkly lights (never mind that this is against housing policy, whoops!), put up lots of jelly letters that eventually bled into the wall. Also, our blinds fell down and we didn't do anything about it for the majority of winter quarter. Over break, maintenance came in and fixed the blinds... Over the colors stains. So, if they ever fall down again, at least whoever lives in this room will be greeted with a joyous Merry Christmas! We also had lots of ornaments and bells that rained glitter. Such a cluster!

Stage #4: the big room re-arrangement. We had this little ritual. Unlike most other roommates, the two of us usually went to sleep and woke up (or not) at the same time. At night, around 2 or 3 or eventually 4 AM, we would turn off the lights and just lay in bed for a good 10-15 minutes. Sometimes we talked about life and the universe. Sometimes we stared at our glow-in-the-dark stars. Sometimes we listened to our little ghost who poured cereal at 3:15 AM every night. Sometimes we played our word association games. Sometimes we just browsed Tumblr/Twitter/Facebook/whatever else on our respective phones and then reported back to each other. One night, the lights were off and we just randomly decided to rearrange the room. We started at 1 AM and ended at 4 AM. It was ridiculous. It literally was like one giant game of Unblock Me - we couldn't move one thing without moving something else. We de-lofted her bed and moved it forward, moved the desks so that they sat (unused) at a corner and moved my bed back. It's sad that I don't have a full picture of this room arrangement, but it was lovely.

Stage #5: these pictures were taken the day we started taking off wall decorations, thus beginning the move-out process officially. It was the final phase in this room we called home for nine months. This shows the final set up: Cassandra's bed was wedged between the wall shelves and these drawers. I love, love, love these pictures because they show everything messy and unorganized, just like how everything is supposed to be. This is home to me. It doesn't look like that in the physical space anymore, but in my memory, it is how the room will always exist.

Anyway, this has been an extremely long post, but I just wanted to remember our room in all of its phases. It's been a place that has given me so much happiness and it has also played a huge part in our second floor dynamics, in fostering the friendships we have with our closest friends, and especially in our relationship as roommates and best friends. So, thank you Serra 217, for doing all that you did for us.

Random thoughts:

1. Finally went shopping today after like 23498 months of abstaining from clothes-shopping. I think that I need to be gradually let back in that jungle because all of the sales and big stores overwhelmed me and I only got a hot pink bandeau from Express and a really cute crop top from F21. I want my shopping prowess of yesteryear back!

2. In 21 minutes, I am going to go watch my dear friend Kristian Ipsen compete in the Olympic Trials - the finals for one of his diving events! What a boss! I'm so excited for him! Just kidding, I watched this and he did it! He's going to the Olympics! So proud of him!

3. Food log of the day: four strawberries, a chili-cheese coney + tater tots + a reunion with my beloved cranberry limeade from Sonic (heart attack!), and a Caramel Frappucino from Starbucks. Never mind that I conveniently didn't run or work out today. Whoops.

4. Also, I want Sprinkles back in my life.

On Philly Cheesesteaks and Friend Time

Last night was a great one.

We went grocery shopping at Walmart...

And then Nicky cooked up some smashingly delicious (don't ask me what that means, because I really don't know other than that it was really, really good) Philly cheesesteaks while Will made us some Brazilian lemonade. Since when did the guys I went to middle school with and will forever remember as scrawny and teensy with huge hair learn how to cook? And grocery shop? And drive? And do anything other than be scrawny and teensy with huge hair? It blows my mind!

Does that look amazing or what? The cheesesteaks were perfect! A+!

The Brazilian lemonade (an eclectic mixture of whole limes, sweetened condensed milk, and water) turned out... Interesting. It turned out looking really good, but was a tad too bitter and lime-y, most likely because we were missing a few key pieces of the puzzle: namely, a bigger blender and some ice. A+ for effort and there's always next time!

Then, there was a lot of pure hang out time. In Will's game room, just watching some TV, some lazin' about and talking, just like the old days. And of course, Cole stealing all of our phones as per usual.

I can't live without my frozen yogurt! We drove to Yogurt Bear and Mollie, Brina, and I talked and hung out while the boys played chess. Typical. My concoction: pomegranate-raspberry (yum!), cheesecake, and strawberry-banana with yogurt chips, almonds, and strawberries. As always, I abided by the $5 rule: you can't go under $5 or you lose!

Hanging out with my middle-school/high-school friends was a joy as always. There's just something about being with the people who have known you the longest, something that is cherished and priceless. And now, they cook for me. Win-win.

Currently Craving...

1. loose, flowy crop tops: I'm in love with looser silhouettes for summer. These tops are just so easy-going and casual. I love them with shorts or jeans or even bandage skirts if the occasion calls for it. I'd go for the hot pink or orange for this season!

2. a white crochet bikini: this is the most perfect bathing suit! Simple shape, but with a lovely texture. The white crochet would look amazing with a golden tan. Imagine this bathing suit on you while you are lounging next to a pool, colorful drink in one hand, and a magazine in the other. It's the very best imagery of summer! (Also, it's on sale for $12.50 for the top and $12.50 for the bottom... That's 25 bucks total for the most perfect bikini ever!)

3. Josie Maran lip stain in Jive: I have used CoverGirl's lip stain for years now and absolutely love it. This coral-orangey-pink color will look wonderful. It'll be as if you just ate a cherry popsicle... Or a strawberry Sno-Cone... Or some fresh pomegranate seeds. I want to try the Josie Maran version because I heard it stays on forever and a day. Yes, please!

4. this pretty printed top: I was originally on the hunt for a super-cute bralette/corset top, but I came upon this and want it so much more. I love the color (there is another version in a tropical red-ish color, which is also lovely), the buttons, and the little peplum flounce thing. I'd wear it with white or dark skinny jeans and wedges to dinner or a boardwalk, or with shorts to the zoo... Anything goes!

5. Oia Jules's gorgeous bracelet: what a beautiful bracelet! The big pink agate focus is so pretty and dare I say perfect for the summer (I'm way too summer-ed up around here). It can be that goes-with-nothing piece that goes-with-everything! Also, check out the other jewelry on this Etsy site - everything is so beautifully designed!

6. high-waisted scalloped shorts: I know that scalloped shorts/skirts/dresses/whatever are kind of last season, but I don't care, I love them! It's simple but different, and very, very me. I've been searching for one in a lighter color- perhaps peach or blush, but black has been growing on me. This one from Bloomingdale's is for a really great price as well!

Happy Father's Day!

In honor of the day of dads...

I cooked for the first time! Yeah, it actually happened and no one is ill from it as of yet! Victoryyy, jazz hands, hollaaaa. Yes, my mom stood behind me and gave me step-by-step instructions the entire time. Yes, I really just cooked the noodles and tossed it into soup that my mom had made yesterday. Yes, it took me three four tries to turn on the stove. But I don't care - I still did it!

And yes, that is an old-style TV and a treadmill in our eating area. Don't judge, people.

I also baked bread from scratch today for the first time as well! Something or other big happened in the universe today, because this is not normal. I repeat, this. is. not. normal.

Look at my pride and joy! (All of the perfect spheres are courtesy of my mother... The lumpy, weird ones were made by yours truly.)

Success! Not to toot my own horn or anything, but it was actually really delicious. Toot, toot.

My daddy and I at my favorite place in the world - my beautiful school

To daddy:
I love you so much and miss you times a million when I'm at school.
Thank you so much for everything you do for our family -
All of your hard work does not go unnoticed.
I am where I am today thanks to you,
And I strive to be as hardworking, intelligent, selfless, funny, athletic, and loving as you.
You are the very best daddy in the world - Never forget that!
Love you so much,
your little puppy, Do.

How I Know I'm Back In Texas

I know I'm back in Texas because my mommy makes me my favorite dumpling knots to welcome me home - just about the only "real" Chinese food I will actually request and then devour.

I know I'm back in Texas because I have a bajillion and twenty things to unpack, throw in the washing machine, and then organize into various parts of my room. (Also, I am extremely proud of the fact that I brought back home an entire hamper's-worth of dirty laundry for my parents to wash... I've always wanted a part in this particular college tradition.)

I know I'm back in Texas because I am reunited with my best friend Brina. I love my college friends more than life itself, but my friendship with Brina is just too unique and weird to be compared to any other friendship. It was so nice walking through a sketchy strip of town (ok, not really) and telling her every single story I could think of and hearing the blunt commentary only she could come up with. I'dCapThat has also become one of my absolute favorite apps... Its accuracy scares me sometimes. (See above.)

I know I'm back in Texas because I went to a crawfish boil, hands-down one of my FAVORITE things about the dirty South. Smokin' hot and satisfyingly salty crawfish with seasoned potatoes/corn on the cob/sausage... What on Earth could be better?

I know I'm back in Texas because almost exactly a year ago, we were at Meg's house celebrating her/our graduation with crawfish and cupcakes. At that time, we were saying goodbye to each other and to the life we knew. Yesterday, we were at Meg's house again eating crawfish and cupcakes, but this time, it was a reunion and we were saying hello. We've come full circle and it makes me unbelievably happy to see everyone so happy and content with college life.

I know I'm back in Texas because I am surrounded by such familiar faces who know me and love me. I have missed everybody oh-so-much and am so thrilled to get to spend three months with them before I go back to school and my other life and my other great group of amazing friends. How did I ever get so lucky in this lottery of life?

The Last Week of Freshman Year

Post-Disneyland, that is.

Believe it or not, I was actually in the library. I had a crazy jam-packed schedule that went something like this: final, six hours of study, another final, six hours of writing a paper. I just about went bat-poop crazy. Also, I realized that I've been to the library a total of three times (to study) this year: during the first week of class, in the middle of winter quarter, and this time. Beginning, middle, end. It's amazing how productive cubicles make you! And weirdly, all three times, I was with these two girls.

I think I was getting desperate at this point, praying that each word I typed got me infinitely closer to the end of my final assignment of freshman year. (Please excuse the mess in the background, it was just another factor of my insane stress level last week.

We literally spent 24 hours cleaning out our room. OK. I still don't understand how it was even possible for it to have seemed like we made zero progress even though we threw out two 50-lb garbage bags at one point and continuously carried big-ticket (as a figure of speech) items out into the hallway. But what's really cool is we developed a vacuum-bag style of packing when we didn't even have those packaged vacuum bags! We did it all by hand! Such domestic divas...

For a packing break, we managed to sneak onto the roof of our dorm, something we've been wanting to do since the beginning of the year. Cassandra and I surprised everyone and it was a really great moment. No, we didn't do anything exciting up there (unless you count Lauren accidentally tossing a beach ball over the side and into the bushes on the side of the building...), we didn't even really talk, but it was a moment where we could look around and take in our surroundings, and give a moment of thanks for us being there and meeting these people. Seeing Hoover Tower from that angle at sunset... Perfection.

Cue the song: Tonight... Tonight... There's a party on the rooftop, top of the world... Such a crazy party we are throwing up there!

About to leave our room for the last time... I had just gone to relinquish our room keys and Lauren and I walked back from Jamba, towards Serra for the very last time we could call it home. I was just a little bit heartbroken, but also too thankful for the people I met and the times I've had to be unhappy.

On the flight(s) back to Texas, I saw the most incredible views. This was just one that I managed to capture on camera, but I saw breathtaking views of clouds and light and the sky and civilization on the ground. But, by far, one of my favorite views was descending into Houston right when the sun was setting and the lights in the city were just beginning to twinkle, a handful more every second. It made me realize how relieved I am to be at home for the summer.

Until September, Stanford!

Ramble de Rambly-Ramble

At the San Diego airport awaiting my flight back home to Houston in two hours. This is not bringing back great memories. But I promised myself that I'd get Quizno's and Starbucks (it's like deja vu...) at exactly 2:00 PM, so I have six minutes to express everything in my mind right now. Which is going to be really difficult because my mind is a gosh-darn mess right now.

First of all, I am exhausted. Emotionally, physically, mentally drained. It serves me right to try and deal with two major finals, a 12-page essay, and packing up my whole life here all in about a 48 hour period. It's practically impossible. I wrote my essay yesterday morning and then proceeded to pack, pack, pack. Up until 2 AM, the room just seemed to be getting messier and messier. Our stuff was multiplying! Room 217 defied all logic, lemme tell ya. Then, we took a nap until 5 AM on the floor, me using a bath towel for a blanket because everything was packed up.

Then, I had to wake up at 5 AM to finish packing, turn in my keys, get some Jamba, and then wake everybody up to say goodbye. I was running a little late (what else is new around here) and didn't get to say goodbye to a lot of people, so I'm thankful we had a great parting last night. My friends dropped me off at the SuperShuttle stop and I proceeded to bawl my eyes out. The driver thought I was graduating. I didn't correct him.

I have a huge tote bag with no zipper, a HEAVY duffel bag with no shoulder strap and no zipper, and two really big checked bags. It was like watching an ant carry a monster-sized cookie. And then I realized that I am an idiot, as I tossed my (what I thought to be) empty Jamba Juice cup into my tote bag and forgot about it until after I checked my bags. The lid had come off and there was Peach-Mango smoothie all over my cardigan, computer charger, Longchamp bag, and computer carrier.

Anyway, I don't think that it's actually hit me that I'm going to be at home for three months and that when I do go back to Stanford, I won't be going to Serra. I'm waiting for the moment when it hits and I become a crumpled mess in the most public place ever.

Time for some Passion Iced Tea and Chicken Carbonara! More details to come.

SoCal Somethings

We were in Southern California for a total of four days and only spent one whole day at Disneyland. We also spent parts of two days on the road. What other mischief did we get ourselves into on this trip, you may ask?

Well.

First off was a pit stop at Starbucks. I got my favorite, as per usual - soy chai latte. They also proceeded to spell all of our names wrong. Interesting. (*sidenote: I'm currently trying to stack up rewards to get my Gold Card, but it's proving to be very difficult, as the closest Starbucks is a 5 minute car ride away. And we don't have access to a car...)

Seven long hours there. Seven long hours back. Slept most of the way. Also, California freeways are so much prettier than Texas ones. Texas just provides a flat, yellow, dusty view. California at least offers up a couple of mountains and lakes once in awhile. On our way back, we played "Hey, Cow!" Absolute hilarity, guys.

Getting close!

On Thursday, we made a short trip to the local Target with Joan and Chelsea. I felt very SoCal (I know, I know, locals don't use that term, but I'm not a local...) in Cassandra's top-down convertible.

Spent A LOT of time out here... Cassandra has the coolest backyard/pool/hot tub ever.

Brushed up on some Jen-An style news. Love her.

I have literally heard about Cafe Rio for nine months. I think Cassandra was raving about it since the very first day I knew her. I had high expectations, but they were met and then some!

(Excuse the blurry, gross iPhone pic.) I got the pork barbacoa salad with everything on top and a mint limeade. Goodness gracious, it was amazing. Also, that green creamy tomatillo sauce is to-die-for. I was stuffed to a point of dying when I was about halfway through with this, but I ate on like a soldier because it was just that great.

On Saturday night, we made banana boats! Marshmallow + chocolate chips + banana + fire = a recipe for world domination. It was such a fun activity for a mellow night, too. I mean, we could've been studying, but come on... We were on a mini-vacay.

Thank you so much, chica, for having us! I loved seeing your house/town/friends/family/dog/cat... It explains so much! I had the greatest time ever and am currently planning a trip back ASAP.

Do you think the first day of school would be too much?
